On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, a conference will be held in Timișoara to mark the opening of the cross-border project “Environmental risk assessment from mining activities as a result of tailings storage in the crossborder area Romania – Serbia – ERA-MIN_RO SRB”.
The project is implemented within the Interreg IPA Romania-Serbia program, and the conference starts at 9:30 a.m. Romanian time.
This ambitious project is jointly implemented by the Politehnica University Timișoara, as a leading partner, and the Mining and Metallurgy Institute of Bor, as a partner, with the aim of improving environmental protection and environmental risk management in mining areas in the territories of Romania and Serbia.
The project aims to assess the current level of pollution in Bor district and Moldova Nouă region, analyze the quality of air, water and soil, as well as assess health risks for the local population. In addition, special attention is directed towards raising awareness of adaptation to climate change and developing sustainable solutions for environmental risk management.
The total budget of the project amounts to EUR 1,242,286.25, of which EUR 1,055,943.31 is provided from the IPA III CBC fund, while the remaining amount comes from public and private sources of partner organizations.
The innovativeness of this project is reflected in the connection of ecology, mining and public health, which enables a comprehensive analysis of complex problems and the development of concrete solutions for long-term environmental protection in mining areas. The opening conference is an opportunity to present project activities, goals and expected results, and will gather representatives of the scientific community, local authorities and other interested parties.
The project represents an important initiative for improving the quality of life and preserving the natural environment in the cross-border region of Romania and Serbia.
