IPA Environmental Protection Project Enters a Key Phase: Joint Steering Committee Meeting Held in Timișoara

Following the official launch of the cross-border project “Environmental Risk Assessment of Mining Activities and Tailings Deposition in the Romania–Serbia Border Region” held on January 29, 2025, in the congress hall of the “Iulius Town” complex in Timișoara, the cooperation between Romanian and Serbian partners has now entered its most critical phase. On May 13, 2025, a regular meeting of the Joint Steering Committee (JSC) of this Interreg IPA project was held at the Rectorate of the Politehnica University of Timișoara. The meeting focused on reviewing the achieved results and making key decisions regarding the continued implementation of project activities.

The following documents were unanimously adopted:

  • The implementation report for the first reporting period,
  • Financial reports from both the Romanian and Serbian sides,
  • Guidelines for improving the public visibility of the project.

During the meeting, particular emphasis was placed on the need for more transparent budget reporting. It was also agreed that project partners should align the frequency and format of progress updates in order to enhance public awareness and communication. The meeting was attended by all members of the Joint Steering Committee, including representatives from the Politehnica University of Timișoara, as well as Serbian representatives from the Mining and Metallurgy Institute Bor. The outcomes of this meeting reaffirm the commitment of all project partners to carry out the initiative in a professional, responsible manner and in the spirit of cross-border cooperation. Special attention was given to the importance of project activities for protecting the environment and improving safety in mining areas along the Romania–Serbia border.
