The ERA_MIN project addresses environmental risks caused by mining activities in the cross-border region of Romania and Serbia, with a specific focus on areas such as Moldova Nouă and Bor. This region faces severe environmental challenges, including soil, air, and water pollution, which significantly impact human health, biodiversity, and ecosystems. Key issues include the disposal of mining waste containing high concentrations of metals, sulfides, and other toxic substances. These materials, when exposed to air and water, oxidize, creating acid mine drainage (AMD), which further contaminates rivers and soils.
The special importance of the project is that it contributes to the development of cross-border collaboration between Romania and Serbia, facilitating the alignment of local and regional strategies within the broader European Strategy for the Danube Region.
The project’s novelty lies in its interdisciplinary and cross-border approach, integrating mining, environmental science, and public health. This synergy enables a comprehensive understanding of complex challenges and the development of sustainable solutions that contribute to environmental protection and the improvement of living standards in this cross-border area.
Project Objectives:
The project aims to assess current pollution levels, analyzing air, water, and soil quality, as well as the health implications for the local population. Another goal is to raise awareness about climate change adaptation and develop sustainable solutions for managing environmental risks in mining regions.
Project Budget:
The total project budget is 1,242,286.25 EUR, with 1,055,943.31 EUR funded by the IPA III CBC program at an 85% co-financing rate. The remaining amount is provided by public and private contributions from partner organizations.
